Homebush Boys High School’s Year 8 debating team became the Western Sydney champions last Friday. This means they are undefeated in 7 debates against teams from schools that stretch from Homebush to the Blue Mountains. The team has been together for two years as they competed in the Premiers Debating Challenge in Year 7 as well. The team is comprised of Aryan Jani, Michael Lopes, Charles McLean and James Smith. They have been mentored and coached by Mr Thomas Lee.

Mr Lee has been ecstatic with the progress the boys have made in a short period of time. “They have shown maturity beyond their years as they grappled with some challenging topics. They work well as a team and the models they offer in the debates have helped them challenge their oppositions”, Mr Lee said.

The team captain, James Smith, offers further insight into their success. “We prefer to be the opposition in the debates as it allows us to put forward different arguments. As well, we have become more confident individually, and as a team, to think on the spot and come up with strong arguments.”

They now will compete against 9 other regional champions for the NSW Title. This competition will be in the form of a 3 day debating camp at Sydney University between 2 and 4 December. The team will have 5 debates and the two most successful teams will meet in the final.

We wish the team and the coach the best of luck in their upcoming debates. They are already winners; having progressed further in the competition than any other debating team in the past 10 years at Homebush Boys.
